3 Ways to Baby Proof Your Home

If you are planning on having a baby, it is very important that you baby proof your home. Your home may not look dangerous to you, but you have to look at things from your baby's perspective. On a yearly basis, approximately 2.5 million children are injured or killed from household dangers. Those injuries can be prevented by simply baby proofing your home. To purchase any of the products that are mentioned in this guideline, check out websites like BabyEarth and BabyAge.com. Here are three ways to baby proof your home:

1. Gates

Installing gates is one of the most important aspects of baby proofing your home. If you have rooms that you do not want your baby having access to, install gates in the doorway of that room. Gates should also be installed at the top and bottom of any stairs in your home and to any doors that lead outside. It is recommended that you install baby gates that come with screws throughout your home. Pressure-mounted baby gates may be cheaper, but they are not as secure as gates with screws. Older style gates have an accordion-style design. Those gates should be avoided because your baby may be able to stick his head through the open slats.

2. Locks, Covers and Latches

Locks and latches should be placed on anything that your baby might be able to open, such as drawers, cabinets and toilets. Many babies die each and every year because they got ahold of chemicals or cleaning supplies that most people keep under their kitchen sinks. Babies are known for sticking their fingers and/or tongues into electrical outlets, which is why any unused outlets should be covered. If you have a fireplace or tables in your home that have sharp edges, purchase cushioned covers for those sharp edges to prevent your baby from injuring himself. It is also a good idea to install covers on all of the doorknobs in your home. It only takes a split second for a baby to open a door and get into trouble with what is on the side side of the door.

3. Choking Hazards

Eliminating any and all choking hazards from the inside of your home can be a difficult task. Although this may sound silly, go into every room in your house and get on your hands and knees. You will then be able to spot any potential choking hazards that your child could see. If an object is small enough for your baby to put it into his mouth, it is considered to be a choking hazard. If you have any tables, shelves or anything else that is close to the ground that contains small objects, remove all of those objects before your baby enters your home. Simply put, until your small child understands what is safe to eat and what isn't safe to eat, take advantage of all of the high shelves that you have in your home.
