India manufacturers of girl's skirts are switching to plain weaves and local fabrics to reduce outlay.
India makers of baby and children's skirts are increasing production of low-end and midrange styles as many clients remain price-sensitive. To keep quotes to a minimum, manufacturers are adopting economical yet quality materials.
Plain weaves are the most common choice and are often procured in bulk to acquire better rates. Very few factories employ handwoven textiles and advanced functional fabrics currently.
Companies are also taking advantage of the local availability of cotton rather than sourcing abroad. As the second largest producer of the fiber, the South Asia country accounts for 25 percent of global supply.
The majority of girl's skirt makers prefer pure cotton for its soft hand and good moisture absorption. The typical constructions are voile, poplin, chiffon, cambric, twill and denim. The first is popular as it is softer and less costly than poplin. Rayon and polyester are the other fabric options. The last is known for being elastic.
Heavier plain weaves are normally less expensive than lightweight ones. In addition, suppliers are reducing the use of premium knitted textiles and blended types that consume a greater amount of inputs. They are also adopting fewer trimmings.
Baby and children's skirts from India are available in casual and formal designs. The first often comes in pique, jersey, seersucker, twill and corduroy constructions as these are easy to maintain and withstand repeated washing.
Dressier styles adopt satin, chiffon and georgette weaves. The materials boast a smoother texture and a lightweight quality that provides an elegant look.
In terms of aesthetics, makers are using ruffles, lace, pin tucks, gathering, smocking, metallic tulle, embroidery and prints as trimming. The popular cuts are tiered and A-line models with short hems. Vibrant colors, including red, blue, purple, orange, yellow and green, are on the rise although traditional soft pink and beige are still offered.
Prices are between $3 and $15, and depend on the kind and amount of fabric, and the trimmings used. The most basic designs are $3 to $5. They come in pure or blended cotton. Voile, denim and cambric constructions are common. Models can be in solid colors, or floral, striped or checkered patterns.
Midrange releases are $5.50 to $8. The selection employs cotton, rayon or polyester, or their blends. Poplin, cambric, denim and corduroy weaves are typical. The skirts adopt smocked, pleated, ruffle, embroidered, bowknot, satin, lace or patchwork trimming.
High-end pieces are $8.50 to $15, and made of organic cotton in chiffon, georgette, satin, twill, mesh or corduroy constructions. They are available in tie-dye patterns, silk-screened motifs or single hues.
