Bandana Bibs Vs. Scoop Bibs

The baby clothing industry is one of the most lucrative in the world. As a global economy, we spend well over 100 billion dollars on baby clothing every year. It is unsurprising, therefore, that there is plenty of choice. In fact, sometimes the huge selection of clothing available can be daunting for parents. With many types of baby clothing, the decision on which items to buy is a matter of personal preference. One area in which many parents struggle though is when choosing baby bibs.
With baby bibs, there are no right or wrong solutions. The choice depends on the baby, the parents, and the bib itself. Here we will look at different types of baby bib, their advantages, and their disadvantages. We hope that by the end of the article you will be better prepared to make the best choice for you and your baby.
Remember, there is no ‘one type fits all rule'. Different babies will have different needs, and parents will like the style of one bib, but not another.
Baby Bibs: Advantages and Disadvantages
The bandana bib:
These bibs are very similar to adult bandanas, except that they have an absorbent material and are more brightly decorated and colourful. Like many styles of adult bandana, these are worn around the neck.
They are fantastic because they look like an item of fashion, rather than a bib. This makes them a great choice for older babies who are learning to eat independently (and for parents who are a little embarrassed that their older babies still need a bib). In winter, they offer an extra layer of warmth because they act much like a scarf. They are difficult for babies to remove themselves, so they will not get their clothes messy when you turn your back for a second. There soft material makes them very comfortable.
They are not a good choice for very young babies, as they need to be able to sit up before they become very useful. They may be a little too hot for the summer months, although if you use the bib only at meal times (they are great dribble bibs too), this will not pose too much of a problem.
The scoop bib:
These baby bibs are normally made of plastic and have a trough-like section at the bottom, which catches any food that falls. They come in many different colours, although their design is standardised.
These are very good bibs for older children learning to self-feed because they keep a lot of food from falling on the floor. They are very easy to maintain, and just need wiping down when dirty. Many are dishwasher proof, great for when they get very dirty.
However, older babies will try to tip food out of the scoop, and so these bibs may not have the desired effect of keeping them clean. Because they are made of rigid plastic, they can be uncomfortable around the neck, but this is solved by opting for a style with a soft fabric closing.
