The American Academy of Pediatrics, and pediatric physicians everywhere, recommend that new mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for at least six months.  Breast milk provides the best nutrition for your baby.  Baby can digest breast milk easier and more efficiently than any manufactured formula or cow's milk.  Additionally, breast milk contains antibodies that protect your newborn from illness and disease.  A newborn's immune system does not have the fighting power of an adult's.

Breast Milk Protects Your Baby Well Into Childhood and Beyond

Results from a study conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences concluded that breastfed babies have a 20 percent reduced risk of death through one year of age compared to formula-fed babies.  The study also showed the longer mothers breastfed, the risk of death continued to diminish.  The immune benefits last beyond the breastfeeding months or years.  Other studies indicate that breastfed babies may have a lower risk of coming down with certain cancers common in childhood as well as reducing the risk of children developing both type-1 and type-2 diabetes.  The list of health protections that breastfeeding provides your baby goes on.  Talk to your pediatrician about these and other benefits of breast milk.

When to Begin

Begin to breastfeed the moment you hold your new baby in the delivery room.  At first, your breasts produce a small amount of a substance called colostrum.  Colostrum contains immune boosting antibodies that protect your baby from disease immediately.  Don't worry that the small amounts of colostrum aren't enough to nutritionally sustain your infant.  Newborns have tiny stomachs and these small amounts will sufficiently satisfy their hunger.  When your baby grows, your breasts will produce larger amounts of breast milk rather than colostrum.

How to Begin

Touch your nipple to your baby's lips while holding his chest and body against your chest.  Your baby will open his mouth wide.  Support your breast while putting your nipple into his mouth.  He should take in your nipple as well as the darker pigmented area around it, called the areola. If your baby seems to have trouble latching on or staying latched, don't give up.  Instead ask the hospital staff for help.  Breastfeeding takes commitment and patience, especially for first-timers.  Once your baby latches onto your breast, which should not hurt, he will instinctively follow through with his part of the job.  If the suckling hurts, the baby probably is not latched on properly.  Gently break the suction by inserting a finger between the breast and the baby's mouth.  Attempt to facilitate proper latch-on again.  Don't hesitate to call on hospital staff for help if you continue to experience pain or latching issues.

Nursing Frequency

The more you nurse your baby, the more nutritional breast milk your body will make.  In a 24-hour period, your baby will probably need to nurse 8 to 12 times.  You don't need to keep a rigid schedule with a nursing baby, as mothers who formula feed their babies must.  Instead, look for signs of hunger, such as rooting, mouthing, crying, or elevated alertness.  Try to nurse your baby before he begins to cry from hunger.  Some newborns will fall asleep while nursing.  Gently rouse him by removing clothing or softly caressing his back and face.  A complete breastfeeding session can take quite a while; sometimes lasting close to 45 minutes.  Create several comfortable spots to nurse your baby around the house.

Breast is Best

Your local pediatric clinic will have supportive staff on hand to offer instruction and advice before and after your baby's delivery.  While formula-fed babies bond just as strongly to their parents, nothing can compare to the comfort and love you will both feel during the breastfeeding experience.  Commit to giving your baby the very best – milk from your own body.
