What to Look Out for When Buying a Pram

A pushchair or pram is going to be with you for a long time, often several years and possibly longer if you have more children. Therefore, it only makes sense that you spend some time considering what you need to look out for when buying one. It goes without saying that safety and comfort are a must, but below are some other things you might not have considered:

Lifestyle: Do you take the bus or train a lot? If the answer is yes then ensure any pushchair or pram is quick and easy to fold away, as well as being light and resiliant to a few bumps. However, if you are more of a walker then it would make sense to ensure good stability, good suspension and agility. If you drive everywhere then a lightweight pushchair or pram that folds down into a small enough size to fit in the car boot is essential.

Space Limitations: How big is it, folded and unfolded? Will it fit in the trunk or back seat of your car? Will it fit through a standard-size door? Can you take it on a subway or bus?

Weight: Think about how much lifting you'll need to do with the pram. Do you regularly have to climb stairs? If you will be lifting the pram a lot you'll obviously want to look at a lightweight model.

Your Height: Of course, all parents want their baby's comfort to be the most important thing, but it is always worth considering your own height. If you are tall you won't want to choose a model that has you bending down, as you can get a bad back. Make sure the model will be suitable for all the people who will be using it.

Wheel Type: Most people prefer the fully independent wheels but fixed position or oversized wheels can make the pushchair or pram more stable.

Portability: Because of the different needs parent often have more than one pram - a full size pushchair or pram for long and bumpy walks or the umbrella type prams that fold down and squeeze into small spaces. If you only buy one pram though, portability needs to be a priority.

Sanity-Saving Features: As with cars, there are many innovative and time-saving pushchair or pram features available. Some models offer the beloved one-hand-fold feature; others have all-terrain wheels; others include parent trays. Plan ahead and think about what you can and cannot live without.

Cost: If you want, you could spend hundreds on a pushchair or pram. The basic rule of thumb is to remember what is usually the case in most things - the more expensive the model, the better the quality. Decide what features you must have and which ones are not quite so necessary. Remember though, this pushchair or pram will be with you for many years so think of it as an investment into your childs comfort and safety.
